About the WPJA:
“Since 2002 the WPJA has been helping couples capture the story of their wedding.
The Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) is a professional organization composed of photojournalists and wedding photographers from around the world. What sets our members apart in the industry is their candid, documentary approach – a distinctly artistic vision toward wedding photography.
The Wedding Photojournalist Association puts the world’s best wedding photography at your fingertips. We offer a new perspective on wedding photography – quietly capturing the real moments as they happen for the bride and groom. It is our goal to use photography to tell the story of your wedding day, not dictate it for you.”

Rubina and Ashish knew from the beginning that they wanted to have their wedding in Turks and Caicos. They had been to the Island for a vacation in the summer of 2011 and soon after they were planning their wedding on the white sandy beaches. What they weren’t aware of at the time was how a storm named Sandy would impact their wedding weekend. Turks and Caicos had been spared a direct hit by Sandy, which was just gaining strength when it passed through the Caribbean days prior to devastating parts of the North East, including Rubina and Ashish’s current town of Hoboken, New Jersey.
The winds on the island had been more than what was usual that time of year, but nothing that significantly effected the wedding. The sangeet was held on the beach front the evening before and just after the ceremony ( which was moved from the planned location on the beach to a lawn with sea view in front of the hotel) Rubina and Ashish headed to the beach to get pictures with the bridal party but little did they know a few abnormally large waves would sweep the bridal party away!
A groomsmen takes a moment to draw a heart in the sand with Rubina and Ashish’s initials! Note: Notice every’s ones attention is on the groomsmen.
Moments later a large wave breaks and washes over the heart drawing and bridal party up to their knees. Rubina and Ashish had been tied together as part of their Indian ceremonial traditions. Ashish instinctively moves up to dry land unknowing pulling Rubina forward!
As the bridal party realizes what has happened, smiles wash over their faces. The good news is that their sari’s were made of a breathable material which dries fast.
Most members of the bridal party lost their shoes in the surge, Rubina and Ashish reach higher ground.
One of my favorite pictures, Rubina looks forward into the future as the bridesmaids assess the damage and try to straighten and get the sand out of the dress.
The more formal part of the portrait session resumes.
Already wet, in such a beautiful place, the bridal party enjoys the warm water.
A smaller wave breaks. If you look closely behind them a larger wave is building!
We’ve all experience being hit by a large wave…just not on a wedding day where we’re in the bridal party!
Completely over taken by the large wave, the elaborate sari’s are weighed down. The gentlemen in the back has lost his pants!
Another of my favorites, some people are laughing others are in panic. The bridesmaid in the middle gets stuck momentarily from the weight of water in her dress as well as being stepped on. The groomsmen pull them out.
Rubina, who was up on dry land finds humor in the bridal parties reactions.
A guest photographed me catching these wonderful moments. I lost my sandals as well!

It’s been over a hundred years this month since the first train passed through Grand Central Terminal. Even before I moved to New York back in 2002 the beauty and nostalgia of Grand Central came to life through the iconic photographs that makes up the lure of New York City. To think it has more then once considered for demolition! The photographs of Grand Central throughout the years stand as a great testament to the power of photography and its ability to not only capture a place and time but the essence of what it was like to actually be there. I can taste the coal dust and imagine myself wearing a proper top coat and hat if I were passing through during those early days. The Atlantic ® has put together a wonderful gallery of some of the great iconic Grand Central photographs, which can be seen here.
I’ve been lucking enough to capture a few memories for several couples I’ve worked for whom found inspiration in Grand Central. Here are a few photographs from those moments, starting with a recent feature in the Knot.

I was lucking enough to work with Bill to capture his proposal to Jen in Grand Central. I later photographed their wedding, read more about their proposal here.
